The film was chosen by the Emile Awards jury as Best of the Best in Short Film, at the 5th edition of the awards.
The ceremony took place on 28 October, International Animation Day, at the Małopolska Garden of Arts, in Kraków, Poland, as part of the 33rd ETIUDA&ANIMA. Director Marta Reis Andrade was present to receive the award at the ceremony.
The Emile Awards consider films that have won the Grand Prix at a qualifying festival, and the Best of the Best in Short Film category singles out, among those films, the one chosen by the jury. “Cão Sozinho” reached the list of nominees thanks to the Grand Prize at Cinanima – Espinho International Animated Film Festival, and was the winner among five nominated films.
Upon receiving the award, the director explained that her goal with the film was to present a feeling and a problem of loneliness and see whether viewers felt less lonely. “Loneliness is a human condition, but sometimes it is unbearable,” she said. “I could do something about it. My grandfather and his dog couldn’t, and, as them, so many elderly. I didn’t want them to fall into forgetfulness.”
Produced by BAP – Animation Studios, in co-production with Ikki Films (France) and Olivier Catherin, “Cão Sozinho” has been selected for 127 festivals and has received more than twenty awards, including the Best Ibero-American Animated Short Film Award at the 2026 Quirino Awards, the Grand Prize at Cinanima and the Vasco Granja/SPA Grand Prize at Monstra – Lisbon Animation Festival.
