Rita Barbosa

Biography

Rita Barbosa (b. 1979, Porto, Portugal) is a filmmaker and visual artist. She holds a degree in Digital Arts from the Sound and Image programme at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) (2002). Her practice focuses on the moving image, working across film, video, theatre and performance through collaborative processes involving creation, writing and visual conception. She has worked as a commercial director since 2006. Her work explores the relationships between text, actors, image and sound, continuously searching for new forms of storytelling and expanded approaches to character psychology. Selected works include Bertie (2024), a VR video game premiered as part of the 92nd anniversary programme of Teatro Municipal Rivoli; 2nd person (2.ª pessoa, 2022), an award-winning short film screened at international festivals including Vienna Shorts, Glasgow Short Film Festival and Kurzfilmtage Winterthur; Jogos de Enganos (2022), a television film produced for RTP; Imaginary Friends (Amigos Imaginários, 2019), a film-performance presented at Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival, PT.21, Teatro Rivoli and CCB, among other venues; and Friends After Dark (À Noite Fazem-se Amigos, 2016), which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival.
