The Outlaws at Cinema Trindade

Published at 20 December 2023

The Short Film Day presents a special session at Cinema Trindade to celebrate the short film that marked Portuguese animated cinema.

On December 21st, the day that marks the return of Winter, at 8.30pm, the 30th anniversary of the animated short fim 'The Outlaws' will be celebrated at Cinema Trindade, with the screening of a new copy digitised by Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema, as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (a measure integrated into the Next Generation EU programme).

Abi Feijó's inspiration for this film was the short story "Os Salteadores", from Jorge de Sena's book "Os Grãos-Capitães".

In 1993, the movie made its debut at the CINANIMA - International Animated Film Festival, marking not only the result of seven years of work, but also the beginning of a career full of awards and distinctions, such as the title of the first Portuguese animated film selected for the Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival (1994).

Approaching the 50th anniversary of The Carnation Revolution, this short film leads us to reflect on fundamental issues related to identity, politics and resistance, offering a shrewd insight into the ideological sensibilities of the Portuguese fascist regime.

The production of this masterpiece coincided with a moment that brought together a number of contemporary authors, such as Regina Pessoa, who today energise and contribute to the rise of Portuguese animated cinema on international circuits. In this special screening, organised by Agência – Portuguese Short Film Agency, the film by the renowned director and producer returns to the big screen in a unique moment, which will include a conversation with the audience, moderated by Jorge Campos (writer of Metaphors about Portuguese Fascism), and featuring Abi Feijó, Regina Pessoa and others involved in the production of the film.
