Special screenings on The Short Film Day

Published at 14 December 2023

On the day that marks the beginning of Winter, The Short Film Day gives special recognition to Portuguese cinema.

In an edition celebrating eleven years of existence, The Short Film Day brings a series of special screenings around the country.

On the day that marks the Winter Solstice, five extraordinary sessions will elevate cinema in its shortest and most creative format, with a selection of short films produced by Portuguese directors.

Three of these screenings will be shown on television on RTP 2 (Cinemax), TVCine and Canal 180. However, the screenings that will take their place in the real cinema will be at the Cinemateca Portuguesa and Cinema Trindade.

In Porto, Cinema Trindade is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the animated short film THE OUTLAWS with a screening of a copy digitised by Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema, as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (a measure integrated into the Next Generation EU programme).

The screening will be accompanied by a talk with director Abi Feijó and guests Jorge Campos (writer of Metaphors about Portuguese Fascism) and Regina Pessoa.

In Lisbon, the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the FILMar project, a film heritage digitisation project developed by the Cinemateca Portuguesa, will present a special programme that brings together new digitisations made with the support of the European Financial Mechanism EEA Grants 2020-2024 and contemporary creations that put the relationship between cinema and the sea into perspective.

This combination resulted in the following selection of films: SEAGULLS CUT THROUGH THE SKY, by Mariana Bártolo and Guillermo García López, SOBRE A TERRA E SOBRE O MAR, by Miguel Spiguel, SAL SEM MAR, by Fernando Duarte, WORDS MELT IN WATER Melt, by Pedro Sena Nunes, SÃO MIGUEL, 1924 - UM FILME DE FAMÍLIA, by Charles Mallet, and COMEZAINAS, by Mafalda Salgueiro.

At Cinema Ideal, the associated programme will feature Leonor Teles, the Portuguese director who in 2016 became the youngest director to receive a Golden Bear for short films at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. The programme includes the short films: SEAGULLS CUT THROUGHT THE SKY, by Mariana Bártolo and Guillermo García López, NHA MILA, by Denise Fernandes, HUMAN NATURE, by Mónica Lima, MY RAGE IS UNDERGROUND, by Francisca Antunes and DILDOTECTONICS, by Tomás Paula Marques.
