“Ruby" by Mariana Gaivão was selected to the competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam

"Ruby", short film by director Mariana Gaivão will be screened in competition at the 49th edition of the Rotterdam International Film Festival that will be held from January 22nd to February 2nd, 2020.

The film, selected to be part of the competitive section Voices Short, portrays a youth in self-discovery, accompanying young Ruby in the days before her best friend Millie returned to England.
This Primeira Idade project, produced by Mariana Gaivão, Alexander Gerner and Pedro Fernandes Duarte, and promoted internationally by the Agencia - Short Film Agency, was shot in Vila de Góis, flanked by the river Ceira, in Serra da Lousã. "In Ruby I returned to the same mountains where I had already filmed and where I grew up, in search of another dimension that assailed me in my childhood, that of the children growing up across the river, children of English, German and Dutch parents, separated from me by different margins of the same place ”, reveals the director. “It fascinated me that the same shale walls echoed the punk guitars of a new youth, equally near and far. The movie was the slow path to it."

Mariana Gaivão began her career as a film editor, having collaborated on films screened at the festivals of Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Locarno, among others. Her first short film "Solo" debuted at Curtas Vila do Conde and won, among others, the prize for Best Short Film at the Montreal Nouveau Cinéma Festival, after which she is selected for the Berlinale Talents as an emerging talent in filmmaking. "Ruby", also premiered at Curtas Vila do Conde where it received the Best Portuguese Director award.
