"Ruby" by Mariana Gaivão will be shown in competition at the next edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal, Canada.
"Ruby", the newest short film by director Mariana Gaivão, will be part of the international competitive program of the 48th edition of the Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinema, to be held from September 27th to October 13th in Canada. This is the Gaivão's return to the festival that screened and awarded "Solo" as Best International Short Film in 2012 and later commissioned a carte blanche "First Light" to be screened at the opening of the 42nd Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma in 2013.
Produced by Mariana Gaivão, Alexander Gerner and Pedro Fernandes Duarte of Primeira Idade, and with international promotion from the Short Film Agency, "Ruby" debuted at Curtas Vila do Conde where it received the Best Director Award. The film portrays a youth in self-discovery, accompanying young Ruby in the days before her best friend Millie returned to England, and features Ruby Taylor and Millie Romer.
Mariana Gaivão began her career as film editor, having collaborated on films screened and awarded worldwide at the festivals of Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Locarno, among others. Her first short film, "Solo", premiered at Curtas Vila do Conde and won, among others, the Best Short Film Award at the Montreal Film Festival, among others, after which she was selected for the Berlinale Talents as an emerging talent in Directing. She then directed “First Light", a carte blanche commissioned by the 42nd Du Nouveau Cinéma Festival, and, most recently, her new short film “Ruby” produced by Primeira Idade.
